I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite things about the holidays is all the tasty treats. Holiday goodies used to be a bag of mixed emotions; feeling like I love it and the traditions of making and sharing goodies, and then feeling like I shouldn’t because its not “good” for me.
But it doesn’t have to be like that. The good news is that we can enjoy all the goodies that come with the season with out the guilt and overeating.
Here are 3 tips to make that happen!
Feed your body, don’t skip meals! When we get hungry our bodies will crave and favor simple carbs. Remember to use your hand portions to build your plate, a palm size for protein, fistful of veggies, cupped and leveled hand of carbs.
Stop thinking treats are bad for you. When we place negative labels on foods, it can lead to guilt and limit the positive associations we can have with foods. It is ok to enjoy foods that don’t fit our normal eating habits. Allow the feelings of pleasure, comfort, happiness and nostalgia to come.
Eat slowly, savior it, and stop when you’re satisfied. This helps with step two, because when we are present with out food we can identify the feelings we have and feel our fullness cues. I like to make moments with my holiday treats, a cookie and a cup of coffee on the couch with the tree all lit up makes me smile!
A little BONUS tip… stay hydrated! I know we have said this before, but we often mistake thirst for hunger and will chase relief of that discomfort with food!
We hope these tips help you slow down and enjoy the holidays and the treats without feeling guilty or overstuffed!
Ps. You do not have to eat things just because it’s the season. If you don’t like something, you don’t have to eat it or finish it.
