Train Smarter, Not Harder: What Most People Get Wrong About Fitness

When it comes to fitness, one of the most common mistakes people make is believing that more is always better. But as any experienced personal trainer will tell you, that mindset can do more harm than good.

In fact, here’s the truth: You don’t get stronger during your workouts—you actually get weaker. Don’t believe it? Try doing as many push-ups as you can, rest a minute, and repeat for four rounds. You’ll likely get fewer reps with each set. Why? Because strength doesn’t come from the workout itself—it comes after, when your body has had time to recover and adapt.

Progress happens after recovery.

Let’s say you go out for a 5-mile run because you felt good and wanted to push yourself. That effort might feel great in the moment—but if you wake up the next day too sore to move, totally exhausted, or worse, injured, you’re now set back. You can’t train consistently if your body is constantly trying to repair itself from overdoing it.

I always remind my clients: Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

A smart training program doesn’t crush you—it builds you. It’s designed to help you improve over time by balancing two key factors: volume and intensity. Volume is the total amount of work you do—like the number of reps, sets, or duration. Intensity is how hard that work is—how much weight you lift or how fast you move.

In a well-designed program, volume may increase month to month, while intensity increases week to week (or the other way around). But trying to ramp up both at the same time? That’s a recipe for burnout, plateaus, and injury.

So yes—working out is good. Pushing yourself can be great. But more isn’t always better. The right amount of training, done consistently, with proper recovery, is what leads to long-term success.

If you're looking for guidance, support, and a smarter approach to training, working with a personal trainer can help you avoid common pitfalls and get better results without burning out.
